Airbnb

Airbnb named Couchsurfing, Craigslist, Hostels.com, and Hotels.com as competitors. Its valuation catapulted to $86.5B by the end of its first day of trading in December 2020. Way before  convincing people to sleep in stranger’s homes and becoming a $100 billion company, it was just an idea to make some extra money and pay the rent. It took the founders of Airbnb, and their first guests, to realize that their idea was much larger than expected. There were a lot of hurdles at first, but they were able to get through these, and become a dominant player in the market with its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in December 2020.

Tinder originally Match Box

Tinder isn’t a traditional startup since the majority of it is owned by IAC. But like many young companies, it began as a fledgling idea under another name, Match Box. Tinder did not take out ads on Facebook and they did not use the mass email lists of college students that people offered them. They understood that there is a huge difference between someone who downloads the app because they found it on an ad and then never uses it again, versus someone who downloaded the app because their friend had a great experience on it and told them about it. This helped them get the “right” people using Tinder. This was a big one for Tinder, especially because Tinder only works when enough people in the same area use it. Instead of simply mass marketing Tinder to everyone with access to the Internet, they instead focused on targeting smaller, tight knit societies and launched with the goal of reaching a critical mass within that society.
